My good friend Vanessa was either visiting me or we were holidaying somewhere.
There was a beautiful beach close by and we decided to go there at night. The beach was a popular place for late night walks and swims, and many other people were there. The stretch of beach we went to at first was quite crowded, so we walked over to the next stretch. The second beach was smaller and less crowded. Like all beaches, it was covered with strands of seaweed that were left behind as the tide went out. And the tide was receding.... Vanessa was walking ahead of me, trying to catch up with her white Shitzu pup (who was quite hyper and excited about being on the beach.) *In real life, Van does not have a Shitzu and does not like small dogs. She prefers Boxers and Bulldogs As I slowly wandered along the beach, I noticed little shellfish/ clams trying to rebury themselves in the wet sand, as if they were caught unaware by the receding tide. I continued walking until I came to a little mound of wet sand. The shellfish were larger. Then I realized that these shellfish were scallops. The scallops were trying to bury themselves into the wet sand too, but instead of burying themselves downwards, they seemed to think that as long as they were covered by sand, they were safe. It was very easy to pick them out of the sand, and I picked up 2 large ones and held them. I looked up and tried to locate my friend's position on the beach - she was quite a distance away. So I started to shout for her, "Van! Van!". But either she didn't hear me or she was too far away and took a long time to come to me.... I wanted Vanessa to come over to help me harvest the scallops. Also, she had a bag or a towel that we could use to carry the scallops in. Unfortunately, I was not the only one who noticed the scallops. A few other people wandered over to where I was. And a little girl was shouting, "The scallops are escaping! The scallops are trying to escape!" I think I must have tried to eat one of the smaller scallops whilst on the beach. It was so alive and wriggly that it was actually quite gross. Its flesh got caught in my lower front teeth and I tried hard to spit out the scallop and pry its flesh from between my teeth.... That's when I woke up : ) |
